Jeremy Shiman co-authors Oculus article on digital tools for decarbonization
Senior Project Architect and Building Performance Specialist Jeremy Shiman, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, co-wrote “From Data to Decisions: Digital Tools for Decarbonizing Buildings at Scale” for the Fall 2026 issue of AIA New York’s Oculus. His co-authors are Carlos Cerezo Davila, PhD, Director of Sustainability at KPF, and Kelley Tapia, AIA, founder of Samskara Studio. Carlos and Jeremy co-chair the AIANY Committee on the Environment (COTE) Decarbonization Subcommittee.
The article comes out of a year of work with the subcommittee. In February, the group organized Driving Digital Decarbonization, a half-day symposium at the Center for Architecture. Over three panels, speakers from engineering, construction, research, and public agencies discussed how digital tools can make decarbonization more common and more effective across the Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. The topics spanned a building’s whole life — from embodied carbon data to grid planning to feedback from construction. Jeremy, Carlos, and Kelley then worked with Oculus to share what they learned with the wider New York community.
The key takeaway is that perfect data will never arrive, and the decisions with the biggest carbon impact happen early, before precise numbers exist. Rough information that teams can act on is worth more than precision that comes too late. Architects don’t need to become data scientists; our work should be focused on making carbon impact visible in the decisions we’re already making.
Jeremy also co-chairs the Carbon Leadership Forum’s New York hub. We thank Jeremy, Carlos, and Kelley, along with the symposium panelists and the Oculus team, for bringing this conversation to a wider audience.
