Nestled within the Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve, this off-grid facility connects students and researchers to one of California’s most unique ecosystems. Designed with minimal site impact, the center reflects its agrarian surroundings, employing timber construction, prefabricated components, and reclaimed barn wood. Its raised, open-air structure honors the sensitivity of the vernal pools while providing shelter from the Valley’s intense heat. Rainwater harvesting mimics the pools’ seasonal cycle, educating visitors on resource conservation. Solar panels and composting toilets help ensure self-sufficiency, while shaded decks and flexible spaces support learning and comfort.
